Make a list, check it twice

Who out there has forgotten something when packing? C'mon...admit it ...most of us.

Let’s talk packing lists.  Some people (like myself) just have list-making in their DNA – and yes, my husband may have given me a little grief over the years, but it’s paid off many times.  Others think, "Nah, I don’t need a stinkin’ packing list," and end up wondering why they didn’t pack something. Some people just have a great memory and don’t need a list. I don’t know about you, but I like to not have to worry about that part when I'm getting ready to travel.

That said, I suggest making a list. I didn’t use to, but after traveling with friends who did and shared their lists, it gave me a good idea of what to consider. Even better, make it on your electronic device and you can always edit or print it.  For me, domestic trips aren’t usually as long of a trip so it’s more of a reference tool – and more times than not, you can go out and buy what you need.  Yet for international trips, I tend to print and gather items over a period of time and check things off – the same items are not always available world-wide.

Here are a few tips – feel free to add in your comments on our social media post, too:

·       Consider making lists for each family member –then it’s easy to reference by traveler. Kids grow up, needs change, therefore the lists will change.

·       Check the weather at your destination AND for your return.  If you’re going to the tropical islands in the middle of a Midwestern winter, the same clothes won’t be useful when you return home and have to scrape the snow and ice off your car.

·       Categorize what needs to be on the plane with you and what gets packed in the checked bag (think meds, chargers, noise cancelling/ear buds, snacks, neck pillow, jacket, light scarf, cash, credit cards, at least one blue or black pen, etc.)

·       Separate domestic v. international specifics –such as passports, visas, currency, adapters, converters.

·       Consider packing an extra canvas bag for souvenirs for carry-on when you return.  Another option is double stack suitcases –  it works well based on my experience.

·       Make a list of to-do in the list – leave a copy of your itinerary and passport at home, inform credit cards/bank if needed, phone service needed, etc.

·       Literally go through your daily routine when you make your list, then edit from there.

·       Consider any dress codes – need one jacket, need formal wear, is it smart casual, business casual, country club casual – and yes there is a difference between the three.  That type of thing.

·       Got a dress-up occasion?  Make sure you have the shoes, etc. to complete the outfit – even do a dry-run to make sure it’s what you’re expecting.

·       Your go-to over-the-counter medication, including any sanitizer method you prefer

And if you’re following the comments on our posts, you’ll see Tom weighed in with several items – including a Tide Pen/wipes to help with spills on your clothes. Tom, I can say I have one of those in my stack that travels with me, and it’s worth carrying! Thanks for reading and contributing!

There is no right or wrong answer on packing lists – it is definitely a personalized item.

Happy Packing!
